Mother Agnes Spencer, SSJ, Legacy Society

Planned Giving

Mother Agnes Spencer, SSJ, Foundress of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Northwestern Pennsylvania was once described as “a woman of strong personality, great tact and ability.” (She distinguished herself through her skillful means of developing a growing community.) A visionary who accomplished much in her 58 years, she was being instrumental in the founding of hospitals, orphanages, schools and other organizations created to meet the needs of the people in the areas she served.

Among her many accomplishments, Mother Agnes opened St. Joseph Hospital (later became Spencer Hospital) and established St. Agatha and St. Brigid Schools in Meadville. She helped open Saint Joseph Orphanage and the Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Erie, PA. She began St. Joseph and St. Patrick schools in Erie, St. Thomas School in Corry and St. Teresa School in Union City, PA. She founded Saint Vincent Hospital and became the first administrator.

Mother Agnes left a legacy with her pioneering spirit and determination to meet the needs of those around her. Her visioning is an inspiration and a benchmark for the goals of others.

Becoming a Member

You can become a member of the Mother Agnes Spencer, SSJ, Legacy Society with a promise of a planned gift to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Northwestern Pennsylvania, Villa Maria Academy, and/or Villa Maria Elementary.

Examples of Planned Gifts:

¨ Will Bequests or Residue of your Estate

¨ Gifts of Securities such as Stocks, Bonds or Mutual Funds.

¨ Gifts of Life Insurance and Annuities

¨ Gifts of Retirement or Pension Plan Assets

Benefits:

¨ Members become partners with the Sisters of St.

Joseph in continuing their ministries.

¨ Members will be invited to attend an annual luncheon.

¨ Members will receive a keepsake.

¨ Members’ names will be inscribed on special Legacy Society plaques at the Sisters of St. Joseph Community Living Center, Villa Maria Academy and Villa Maria Elementary.

¨ Members will be remembered in the prayers of the Sisters of St. Joseph during a monthly Liturgy.
