Mission & MinistryEducation MinistriesEducation has always been an important ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph and the tradition continues. The first Sisters in Northwestern Pennsylvania taught at St. Ann’s School for Girls in Corsica. From there, they established Villa Maria Elementary School, Villa Maria Academy, Villa Maria College (has since merged with Gannon University) and staffed numerous schools throughout the Diocese. We continue to educate today in traditional and non-traditional classrooms. Through ministries such as Erie DAWN and the SSJ Neighborhood Network, our Sisters teach young, and often single, mothers about parenting skills, household finances or owning a home and becoming skilled and independent. Through Catholic Rural Ministry, we maintain a presence in remote areas of the diocese and assist in teaching residents any number of skills or spiritual enrichment. Religious education, vocation, formation, spiritual direction, adult education, social work and campus ministry, and pastoral ministry all include education of some type -- though not the traditional textbook, classroom variety. There will always be a need for education and we will always respond. Whether in the classroom, working with the homeless, serving the elderly or others in transition or those in poor health, we recognize that education is fundamental to the future. ![]() Villa Maria Elementary School![]() Sisters of St. Joseph Neighborhood Network![]() Erie DAWN
