Healthcare Ministries

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Northwestern Pennsylvania, responding to the needs of the era and the area, established our first healthcare ministry, St. Joseph Hospital in Meadville, in 1870.  It was a train wreck that led our Sisters to convert their convent into a temporary hospital and a year later to establish the hospital which became Spencer Hospital.  A few years later (1875), we established Saint Vincent Hospital in Erie and in 1901, the Saint Vincent School of Nursing. The following year, 1902, saw the opening of Spencer Hospital School of Nursing.  One of our earliest members, Sister Bernard Sheridan, is recognized as America’s first formally educated nurse anesthetist.

In addition to our sponsored ministry, Saint Vincent Hospital, many of our Sisters minister in healthcare in other venues.  We have Sisters who teach college level nursing, serve as nurses at Community Centers, work in pastoral ministry at hospitals, serve as hospice nurses, reflexologists, massage therapists and more.

Aside from education, healthcare has always been one of the main ministries of the Sisters of St. Joseph.
