Mission & MinistryHuman Rights“As its fundamental premise, [the Universal Declaration of Human Rights] affirms that the recognition of the innate dignity of all members of the human family, as also the equality and inalienability of their rights, is the foundation of liberty, justice and peace in the world…” Human Rights Day is held on December 10th, the anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly's adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. Human TraffickingThere are more people in slavery today than at any time in human history – 27 million. This growth in the number of slaves is driven by the population explosion, widespread impoverishment of people and their resulting vulnerability, and government corruption so that people are not protected from the violence of enslavement. www.freetheslaves.net TortureThe UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment refers to: “an act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person”, for a purpose such as obtaining information or a confession, punishment, intimidation or coercion, “or for any reason based on discrimination of any kind”. Women RightsIn September 2000 at the United Nations Millennium Summit, all 189 member states adopted the Millennium Development Declaration which outlines a series of eight specific goals, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to be achieved by the year 2015. The MDGs address the issues of extreme poverty and hunger, gender equality, the health of mothers and children, education, the spread of HIV/AIDS, global partnerships and the environment. A midpoint assessment of the goals in 2008 showed mixed progress. What was clearly demonstrated, however, is the importance of progress toward achieving MDG#3, gender equality and the empowerment of women, in realizing the MDGs in general. All eight MDGs touch the lives of women directly, and unless women and girls are provided with the opportunities to reach their full potential, little will change for them in the years to come.
