Maurita Murnaghan, SSJ

Maurita Murnaghan, SSJMaurita Murnaghan, SSJ, 89, of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Northwestern Pennsylvania, died on December 30, 2008.  She was in her 72nd year of religious life.  She was born in Ridgway, Pennsylvania on December 12, 1919, the daughter of Henry and Cecelia Modenbach Murnaghan.  She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph from St. Leo parish, Ridgway, on September 8, 1937 and professed her final vows on August 15, 1943. 

Sister Maurita earned a BA in Music from Villa Maria College, Erie in 1952 and a Masters Degree in Music from Catholic University in Washington, DC. 

She taught at St. Andrew and St. Joseph Schools in Erie; St. Francis School in Clearfield, PA; Holy Rosary in Johnsonburg, PA and for more than forty years at St. Bernard in Bradford, PA where she also taught piano.  In addition she served in various other ministries including at the Villa Maria Motherhouse and St. Mary’s Home of Erie.  She retired from active ministry in 1998 and has since resided at the Villa Maria Community Living Center in Erie where she enjoyed playing Wii bowling.
