Catholic Rural Ministry is a collaborative venture of the Sisters of St. Joseph, the Benedictine Sisters, the Sisters of Mercy and the Erie Diocese. Established in 1999, Catholic Rural Ministry serves 15 parishes in Potter and McKean counties -- an area where Sisters had been relatively unknown. Through Catholic Rural Ministry, the Sisters are able to have a presence in this area, build relationships and, working in conjunction with the parishes, respond to the needs of the residents.
The Sisters established their residence in a century-and-a-half old farmhouse in the village of Roulette, PA. Their job was to be a “presence to the people” and establish their mutual roles as they became familiar with the needs of the area. This approach has evolved into a real success story.
Fundraising is an important part of a project such as this. During late
summer, the Sisters and many helpers picked sweet corn and marketed it.
The proceeds help facilitate the many undertakings that make up their
day-to-day activities. On a larger scale, grant money is sought from
various organizations. |
