Catholic Rural Ministry is a collaborative venture of the Sisters of St. Joseph, the Benedictine Sisters, the Sisters of Mercy and the Erie Diocese. Established in 1999, Catholic Rural Ministry serves 15 parishes in Potter and McKean counties -- an area where Sisters had been relatively unknown. Through Catholic Rural Ministry, the Sisters are able to have a presence in this area, build relationships and, working in conjunction with the parishes, respond to the needs of the residents.

A three-year commitment of shared funding from the Diocese of Erie and the three Communities of Women Religious created the beginning finances. A commitment by two Sisters to bring the presence of Sisters and their dedicated service to that northeastern area of the Diocese of Erie began this project.

The Sisters established their residence in a century-and-a-half old farmhouse in the village of Roulette, PA. Their job was to be a “presence to the people” and establish their mutual roles as they became familiar with the needs of the area. This approach has evolved into a real success story.

The Sisters meet with resident pastors to surface needs and visit the people of the parishes throughout the area. The Sisters provide programs such as the Christopher Leadership Program for Parishioners, communion services, scripture study/prayer gatherings and whatever they are invited to do in the parishes and neighboring communities.  They strive to bring the word of God to the people and to let the people know that they are an important part of the Diocese of Erie.

Fundraising is an important part of a project such as this.  During late summer, the Sisters and many helpers picked sweet corn and marketed it. The proceeds help facilitate the many undertakings that make up their day-to-day activities.  On a larger scale, grant money is sought from various organizations.
