SSJ Spirit of Courage

SSJ Spirit of CourageThe SSJ Spirit of Courage recognition honors individuals who have shown remarkable courage in recovery from an accident, injury, illness, addiction, economic adversity or who have shown courage in another way.  The quiet, daily acts of ordinary people who refuse to give up in the face of illness, injury or other adversity represent courage in its truest form.  Yet, all too often, these people struggle alone with no fanfare and little or no recognition for their courage. They are the heart of the SSJ Spirit of Courage.

The Spirit of Courage concept is a natural fit with our many ministries of education, health care, care for the elderly, social work, finding shelter for the homeless and affordable housing for mothers and children.  The success of the SSJ Spirit of Courage allows us to continue serving the community as it helps support these various ministries. The highlight of the SSJ Spirit of Courage is the annual recognition dinner, which is held each year.

How can I get involved with the SSJ Spirit of Courage?

You are encouraged to think of someone you may know who is deserving of this recognition and nominate him or her.  You can make a reservation to attend the dinner.  In addition, a variety of sponsorship opportunities are available to support the recognition dinner as well as other ministries and community service projects of the Sisters of St. Joseph.

How do I nominate someone?

You can download a nomination form, submit an on-line nomination, or contact Kristina Huber at 814-836-4202 or to: kristina.huber@ssjerie.org

How are the honorees selected?

Each year, the Sisters ask for nominations from the community.  The nominations are carefully reviewed by a selection committee that is comprised of volunteers from within the community, including some Sisters.  The selection committee ultimately determines each year’s honorees.

What types of things do the Sisters do with the money raised through the SSJ Spirit of Courage?

Many individuals and businesses generously support the SSJ Spirit of Courage throughout the year.  This support helps us to continue serving the community through a variety of ministries.

There are few people in the area who do not have some connection, directly or indirectly, to the Sisters of St. Joseph, many through our work as educators and nurses.  But we have moved beyond the classrooms and hospitals and our work today includes numerous other projects and ministries.  We are involved in pastoral, social and liturgical ministries in Catholic parishes, global mission projects, outreach to the elderly, rural ministry, campus ministry, and youth ministry.  The SSJ Spirit of Courage is one way that we learn about the needs in our community and give recognition to individuals living courageous lives.
